Independence
Why does the ‘At the Limits’ model work so well?
It’s simple really: world class speakers; leading edge presentations; senior level attendees; lively debate and discussion; faultless organisation; and an obsession for academic independence!
Each year, personal invitations from our Chairpersons are highly sought amongst the expert community, and it is the very fact that the event is driven by these eminent academics that gives the entire series it’s independent credibility.
To our invitees, the events offer the opportunity to network with fellows from the upper echelons of medicine, academia, government and regulatory bodies. A real chance to understand the challenges the community will face in the future.
Our ongoing mission, and one of the founding principles of the series, is to bring education to the widest possible audience, not only from the developed countries but also from Africa and Asia. For this reason we originally based the event at the University of Cape Town (UCT), fully accessible to a majority of African delegates and still a sensible overnight travel option for those attending from Europe. However, for some sponsors it is inappropriate to hold events in that location and so we now host ‘At the Limits’ events across in Europe, maintaining academic excellence and independence.
For our Industry supporters this independence not only benefits their standing in the eyes of the expert community, but allows them to work more comfortably within compliance guidelines – sponsor funding for the meeting is generally made by way of unrestricted & educational grants.
Rest assured our Industry partners have no involvement in the organisation of this event, except to send a delegation of senior company representatives to attend. Their role is simply to continue building the crucial understanding between academia and industry in a scientific setting.
