Dr. Bines is a medical oncologist and the coordinator of the Breast Cancer Tumor Group at the Instituto Nacional de Câncer in Brazil. He is an expert in the treatment of breast cancer with a special interest in the development of therapies for low and middle- income countries.
Dr. Bines received his Medical degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1989 and completed his internship and residency at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. After completing his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Northwestern University, he joined the medical staff at the Instituto Nacional de Câncer in Brazil in 1998. and laid the groundwork for the multidisciplinary breast cancer weekly meetings, breast cancer genetic counseling clinic and the breast cancer clinical trials unit.
Dr. Bines has made contributions in the area of disparities in breast cancer treatment and is one of the founders and currently the scientific director of the GBECAM: the Brazilian Cooperative Group for Breast Cancer Research, where he coordinates epidemiological and clinical trials.
Dr. Bines participated in the Breast Health Global Initiatives (BHGI) meetings and reports; he was formerly a member of the Breast International Group (BIG) Task Force for developing or underrepresented regions and currently he takes part in the BIG advisory council.
