Dr. Joost Smolders (1983) studied medicine at Maastricht University (Maastricht, NL). At this university, he investigated as a PhD-student the role of vitamin D supplements in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). His work mostly comprised the association of vitamin D with immunological disease outcomes, and the development of the SOLAR trial. SOLAR is a randomized controlled clinical trial on the efficacy of high dosed vitamin D supplements in relapsing remitting MS. Afterwards, he worked as a post-doc at the Huitinga Neuroimmunology research group at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (Amsterdam, NL), where he investigated metabolism of vitamin D in the central nervous system and phenotyped primary human lymphocytes from CNS tissue. Currently, he is working as a resident in neurology (Canisius Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis, Nijmegen, NL), and continuing his research on vitamin D and the immunology of MS at the Academic MS Center Limburg/ Maastricht University.
